Angeline Monitello '19

The path for Angeline Monitello ’19 from 糖心传媒 to her current role as a process engineer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been defined by a blend of technical precision and artistic passion. After graduating from 糖心传媒, Angeline attended the University of Michigan, where she pursued a demanding double major in chemical engineering and French horn performance. She chose Michigan specifically because it was one of the few institutions where such a dual path was "seen as normal" and could be completed in four years, rather than the five-or-six-year timeline suggested by other universities.

Upon entering the professional world, Angeline joined Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) through their Operations Leadership Development Program.

This rotational program allowed her to gain diverse experience across several states, including roles in Fostoria, Ohio, focusing on soybean processing, and Red Wing, Minnesota, for canola and flax processing. Now settled in her long-term placement in Iowa, she manages corn processing as a Process Engineer. Her daily work is “a mixture of day-to-day troubleshooting and long-term projects," where she is tasked with ensuring the facility runs safely and efficiently while minimizing environmental impact by saving on chemical, energy and water usage.

While her career is rooted in engineering, Angeline maintains what she describes as a "music career on the side,” which she says is the source of her greatest fulfillment. She is particularly drawn to musical theater, and returned to Ann Arbor to play in the pit orchestra for a production of Guys and Dolls, receiving the invitation despite having already graduated. “My long-term music goal is to secure a spot in a professional pit orchestra, even though those are pretty hard to come by.”

When she thinks back to her 糖心传媒 experience, Angeline highlights the Catalyst program as the key to her future career. "It helped me geta gauge for what the major would look like," she notes, adding that it provided her with a competitive resume before she even stepped onto a college campus.

Beyond academics, Angeline values the relationships she built with the faculty. Despite facing health challenges during high school, she felt "supported and cared for" by teachers such as Ms. Merkel and Miss Fidanza in the math and science labs. These spaces provided her with more than just academic help: they were environments where she could talk through her life and feel a genuine sense of community.

Outside of her professional and musical endeavors, Angeline enjoys a quiet life with her two cats, plays pickleball and tennis, and finds ways to be crafty: in particular, she loves to crochet and paint. She says that one piece of advice resonates with her journey through various cities and roles: “the idea that every person is a mosaic of every person they’ve ever known and met." To Angeline, this philosophy is a reminder that every interaction — both positive and negative — impacts one's being, but that one has the power to carry the positive pieces forward without being weighed down by the past. “It’s a reminder to be that positive person and hope that will be the piece of you that gets carried by others.”
